Chiahung Su SS25 Collection

For it’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, Chiahung Su again pushes his boundaries by blending disparate influences into a cohesive and striking allure. Drawing inspiration from hunting and fusing this with Taiwanese culture, Chiahung Su delivers a collection that marries utility with artistry, tradition with modernity.

A Fusion of Hunting Tradition and Taiwanese Culture

The heart of Chiahung Su’s SS25 collection lies in its ability to transform the rugged, functional elements of hunting apparel into high artisanal fashion. Patchwork designs are prominent, symbolizing the utilitarian spirit that underpins hunting. These patchwork elements are not just decorative; they signify a lifestyle grounded in practicality and adaptability—echoing the resourcefulness found in Taiwanese culture.

Chiahung Su greatly balances aesthetics in this collection, offering both slim and oversized silhouettes, slim and pleated wide trousers can be paired with short and wide blazers, providing versatility and a fresh take on conventional tailoring.

Handcraft; Traditional Techniques, Contemporary Results

The hallmark of the SS25 collection is the designer’s deep commitment to traditional craftsmanship. One of the standout pieces, the hand-dyed strapping lapel shirt, reflects Su’s obsession with process and detail. The garments are imbued with personal touches—like the handwoven and knitted peak lapel blazer, hand-dyed using mud sourced directly from Taiwan.

Innovation within the boundaries of tradition continues with the introduction of new linings for outerwear and blazers. Chiahung Su, known for using vintage kimono linings from the 1950s in previous collections, has now adapted to the inevitable end of these resources.

Pottery and Fashion: A Cross-Disciplinary Artistic Expression

A unique aspect of the SS25 collection is Su's expansion into the world of pottery. His recent opening of a pottery atelier in early 2024 signals a shift in his creative journey, one that merges the tactile nature of clay with his fashion designs. This crossover is most apparent in the debut of handmade ceramic bottles, perfume, and ceramic buttons, all crafted in his atelier. These ceramic accents are used alongside handmade copper-oxidized buttons on outerwear, supplementing the vintage Taiwanese coins from the 1940s that previously adorned his garments.

This introduction of pottery-based accessories demonstrates Su’s versatility as an artist and his commitment to elevating every aspect of his designs, from the clothing itself to the smallest button. The handcrafted nature of these elements adds a level of intimacy and craftsmanship that is rare in today’s fast-paced fashion industry.

A Commitment to Sustainability and Local Craftsmanship

True to his ethos, all the fabrics in Chiahung Su’s SS25 collection are sourced from Taiwan, Japan, and Italy, with many of them undergoing natural dyeing processes at his dyeing studio in Taiwan. The meticulous hand-weaving and handmade construction of every garment are testament to Su’s dedication to preserving artisanal traditions while embracing contemporary design.
