YUTA MATSUOKA
Reviving the Past with Artisanal Modernity
In Gifu, Japan, Yuta Matsuoka’s atelier is a living embodiment of his design philosophy, a space where the past and present intertwine seamlessly. For over a decade, Yuta has cultivated a unique identity in the fashion world, crafting unisex garments that blend old-world inspirations with contemporary craftsmanship.
A Space That Reflects a Designer’s Vision
Yuta’s atelier and shop, housed in a carefully curated space in Gifu, offers a glimpse into his creative world. The store showcases a thoughtful mix of archival pieces and the latest collections, unified by his unmistakable aesthetic. Vintage furniture, handpicked during Yuta’s inspiration hunts across Japan and Paris, creates an environment that aligns perfectly with his garments. This harmony between the clothing and the space gives visitors a full sensory experience of his design ethos.
Inspired by History, Designed for Today
Yuta’s designs carry the weight of history without being bound by it. Drawing inspiration from vintage furniture, classic movies, and antiques, he breathes new life into old ideas. He scours antique markets across Japan and Paris, finding sketches and prints from as far back as 1830 to incorporate into his garments. But while the inspiration is vintage, the execution is anything but. Yuta reimagines these historical elements through cutting-edge construction techniques and custom artisanal fabrics, creating pieces that feel timeless yet distinctly modern.
Mastery of Materials
Born in Bishu, an area renowned for its fabric mills and luxury materials, Yuta’s journey into textiles began at the source. Collaborating closely with the same mill where he honed his craft, Yuta has developed a deep understanding of fabric manipulation. Together, they create materials exclusive to his label, such as artisanal textiles that mimic vintage wear through intricate processes but are entirely new. These fabrics are sourced from across Japan and bear the mark of great craftsmanship, placing Yuta’s garments in the same echelon as brands like Yohji Yamamoto and Ziggy Chen, whose materials also originate from Gifu.
Yuta’s unisex clothing is imbued with subtle romanticism and a touch of humor. He designs with the belief that clothing should make people feel sexy, but in an understated way. This delicate balance of sensuality and wit gives his pieces a distinct charm, making them as playful as they are sophisticated.
