KLASICA
A Story of Passion, Craft, and Transformation
Tokyo’s smallest boutique space is by Klasica, and it is more than just a store, it is the living archive of Kohei Kawamura’s journey as a designer. Founded 20 years ago, Klasica began in a space no larger than 10 square meters, where Kohei first sold belts, vintage clothing, and antiques. It was here that his design ethos took shape, rooted in reinterpretation, craftsmanship, and personal connection.
From Vintage Military to a Full-Fledged Label
Kohei’s entrance into design was entirely self-taught. While running his small shop, he noticed a gap in the market: vintage military garments from the U.S. and Europe were available in surplus, but their large sizes didn’t suit most Japanese customers. Instead of simply selling these pieces, Kohei began reworking them, tailoring the fits, altering details, and creating something entirely new.
As demand grew, customers responded to his designs, and stores took notice, requesting wholesale orders. But working solely with reworked vintage meant he had no scalable stock, leading him to formally launch Klasica as a full-scale label, one that maintained its artisanal, small-batch philosophy while evolving into original, thoughtfully constructed garments.
A Space That Reflects Its Origins
Although Kohei could now move to a larger location, he chooses to remain in the same intimate space where it all began. The boutique serves as a reminder of his early days, keeping him humble, grounded, and connected to his customers. The store’s energy is an extension of Kohei himself: welcoming, positive, and deeply personal. Despite its size, the space feels expansive, filled with enthusiasm, passion, and the joy of creation.
The Craftsmanship of Klasica
Klasica’s aesthetic remains rooted in its vintage-inspired origins, but the designs have expanded beyond military reworks. Kohei collaborates with local fabric mills in Japan, producing exclusive small-batch textiles that are woven and dyed specifically for Klasica. Each collection features thoughtful details ensuring that every aspect of a Klasica piece is carefully considered.
