IERIB
Kyoto’s Hidden Leather Atelier
Just outside central Kyoto, amidst traditional machiya houses, lies Ierib, an atelier combined with a shop where artisan Rei brings his leather creations to life. This intimate artisan’s space offers visitors a rare glimpse into the life of a leather craftsman. Rei personally handles every step of the process, designing, pattern-making, material treatments, and even crafting metal parts.
Ierib, meaning “By Rei,” reflects his philosophy of personally overseeing every detail, from design and pattern-making to material treatments.
Rei’s passion for rare leathers is evident in his use of bear, shark, crocodile, and deer hides, with shark leather from Tohoku standing out as particularly unique. Beyond leather, he incorporates textiles like hand-dyed sake bags and vintage Japanese coins repurposed into buttons.
Visitors to Ierib’s atelier can shop from an exclusive selection of jackets, footwear and accessories or opt for a made-to-order piece. Appointments allow Rei to personally measure clients and ship their bespoke garment home.
