Richard Alexander Cooke
Past, present, future; birth, life, death; beginning, middle, end - The number three is considered sacred, everything in life comes in threes, even the mentioned examples. Richard Cooke, a Brooklyn-based designer from the US feels the same about the significance of the number, and referrals can be found throughout his entire work.
Cooke and his intimate team develop artisan garments in their atelier in Brooklyn, they aim to create garments that feel like they can be picked from a tree. Pieces should be harmonic in texture, color, and wear. Nature is the best artist. And an inspiration to many, but Cooke wants to take this a step further.
Imperfections and inconsistencies can be traced throughout Cooke’s work, his pieces start with hand-cut patterns and are full of hand-sewn details. All the roughness that meets the eye cannot be felt though - the picked fabrics feel delicate and soft in wear.
Cooke his selection of fabrics is often the initial step when starting work on his collections. He wants the best, and only the best. The previously mentioned inspiration of nature is also found back in the sourcing of fabrics, Cooke only picks natural fabrics, those that are not polluted by plastics.
Even though Cooke has been designing for a while, being schooled in design, this is only the second collection of his eponymous label. We are excited to see how the brand will develop over time, but its elaborate philosophy and punctuation are promising!
