Sandrine Philippe SS22 UNDERDUST

When it comes to craftsmanship, Sandrine Philippe needs no introduction. Her dark, romantic, and artisanal designs have always been mesmerising, and for Spring/Summer 2022, she continues to hone her brand’s aesthetic with a collection titled UNDERDUST.

Sticking to her usual black, white, and grey colour palette, the collection is an “analysis between human and nature” — a reflection on the human condition in their environment. For a brand that has never shied away from fabric manipulations, the constructions, fabrics, and designs are, of course, not as simple as they seem, as they each carry different symbolism and meanings.

There’s Protection, which translates itself to the armour Aprons made of waxed cotton with hand-embroidered details.

Then there's the Mimesis, a fabric that’s created by using a mash-up of materials including leather with waxing techniques that symbolises urban pollution. Then the materials are voluntary degraded to represent the fragility of the human condition, with destroyed embroidery that are like the remnants of a past splendour.

All in all, the collection gives us a visual insight into the depths of Sandrine Philippe, where fashion is never constrained by gender boundaries.

About Sandrine Philippe

A couture house based in Paris, Sandrine Philippe founded her eponymous label in 1998, following stints at Popy Moreni and Courrèges. Philippe’s atelier is often called a “veritable creative laboratory” due to its atypical aesthetics as well as the experimental installations where it mixes fashion with art, music, and dance. 10 years after the brand was established, in search for a new aesthetic, the designer added menswear into the mix, expanding her sensible comfort-meets-poetry universe. Every single piece in the collections are handcrafted in the brand’s Parisian workshop with extreme precision, experimentation, and knowledge.
