BEAUGAN - SPRING 2022 COLLECTION

BEAUGAN - SPRING 2022 COLLECTION

Beaugan wants you to get lost in the woods with them this Spring/Summer 2022.

From listening to the voices speak in the aching branches to whispers in the breeze, Beaugan wants you to get lost in the woods with them this Spring/Summer 2022.

This round, the brand continues to champion utilitarian workwear and military garments by foraging through the archives of the 19th century. Their discovery? A rare ‘40s 10th Mountain Division jacket, reimagined in lightweight cotton and dyed by hand in mud from Amami Island — a signature of theirs.

Material-wise, to maintain that lightness throughout the collection, Japanese paper, or Washi — crafted using fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree — is a mainstay in the designs. Elsewhere in the mix are materials including bamboo linen and hem, cotton typewriter and linen. Produced and woven in the Japanese countryside, the process of working on the natural materials is what makes Beaugan that much more notable.

The collection comprises an array of looks that exude a sense of ease, from lightweight co-ords that radiate refined simplicity to expertly draped tops and skirts that showcase Beaugan’s impeccable technique. For a brand that’s known for its expertise in natural dyes, the looks are coloured in a mixture of their signature muted hues with pops of persimmon, garcinia and a new Lac dye that rejuvenate the spring/summer mood. The latter is extracted from the scale of the Laccifer Lacca bettle, found in South East Asia, Nepal, India and Myanmar. Included in the mix is a tie-dye floral motif that is peppered all over a button-down shirt.

About Beaugan

At Beaugan, the brand’s identity is influenced by three ethe that are near and dear to the founders’ hearts. Like the charm of utilitarian workwear and military garments, they want their designs to last through the years while ageing beautifully, increasing in value and beauty over time, which leads us to the next point.

Beaugan pays an immense amount of attention to natural materials not only as an ode to nature but also because to them, the quality is incomparable. Not only that, focusing on nature also ties in with both the founders’ cultural backgrounds (Japanese and Australian), and it’s “something to protect as much as it is something to respect”.

Lastly, as one half of its co-founder Christopher hails from Australia, the brand isn’t complete without the touch of laidback attitude that the Australians are known for. At the end of the day, as Christopher says, “Clothing doesn’t make people cool, people make clothing cool”, the pieces are made to be worn for any activity. After all, it’s all about the mindset and mentality.

From championing centuries-old, artisanal weaving to creating original fabrics, to incorporating natural dye techniques, Beaugan is a slow fashion brand in their own right, and they let their pieces tell the story.

Beaugan is helmed by Christopher and Mike Okamura Hancy. Previously studying pattern cutting under Mr. Yukio Kakita, a bespoke tailor and former couturier at Christian Dior, he was in the midst of developing his first Beaugan collection when he met Miko Okamura Hancy who enrolled herself in a master’s course in London in preparation to start her own slow fashion brand. The rest is history.
